Protected Areas Vulnerability Analysis
The SPARC project completed a multi-factor vulnerability analysis of over 1200 selected protected areas across the tropics. Analysis included the following dimensions that may contribute to a protected area’s vulnerability to climate change:
Habitat Buffer — based on a measure of intact habitat surrounding the protected area
Tourism Demand — based on a model of tourist comfort in different climates
Species Turnover — based on modeled species distributions and the degree to which species composition within a protected area is projected to change
Habitat Turnover — based on a classification of climate/ecosystem types and the degree to which they are projected to change
Resource Pressure — based on population density near the projected area
Communities at Risk — based on rural populations exposed to enhanced flooding or droughts
Infrastructure at Risk — based on buildings exposed to enhanced flood risk
